Infographic: Email Opens on Mobile Devices CONTINUE to grow in 2013

As we make our way through 2013 the email industry continues to evolve. A major factor driving this change is a shift in consumer behaviour, who are increasingly reading email and online content via their smartphones. Just how much is this changing? Well, just four months ago Inbox Marketer set out to gain insight into the email open habits of our clients’ customers. We analyzed millions of email opens across all types of industries within our North American client lists and came to the conclusion that the preference for opening emails on smartphones was much higher than we initially predicted. As of December 2012, we determined that 44% of all emails opened by our clients’ customers & prospects over the four month period (September to December 2012) were opened on a mobile device. At the time we predicted that this wasn’t simply a seasonal spike, but rather a much longer trend that won’t reverse itself anytime soon. You can view the first infographic here [1]. In an effort to help forecast the future for our clients, we extrapolated the trend data and estimated that by Spring 2013 (or the end of Q1), we would see mobile Open rates intersect (or come very close) PC (traditional desktop & laptop) opens. Well, the results are in and we have to say we were pretty close in our prediction! See Part II of the study below for the updated Mobile VS. PC Open rate trend graph. It’s important to understand that a mobile viewing experience changes everything for your customer, especially if your email and online content isn’t optimized for the smaller screen.
